Phil's not that guy, and he doesn't have to be. Some bassists are masters at telegraphing a song, and you know exactly where it's going. Listen to the intro to 'Help on the Way' when the band plays the rhythmic figure and Phil is doing something totally different (but it works great). Phil's often playing an independent line from the band in most instances. It's sort of how piano players try to sound like Thelonious Monk by playing a bunch of cluttered notes, but they completely forget that Monk swung really hard. Different eras have different sounds, but his playing style is still very much himself. The elements that stick out to me with Phil's playing is that he really 'gets after it' all the time. Some enemies like Gibdos are especially vulnerable to fire, so use the Fire Rod wisely. This rod spits out a ball of fire that sears most enemies to a crisp. The Fire Rod is obtained in a Treasure Chest in the Skull Woods.
